Recently, it was reported that Intel is in acquisition talks with specialist chip maker GlobalFoundries(GF), which could reach $30 billion. GlobalFoundries is a semiconductor foundry that was spun off from AMD in 2008 and is headquartered in California.
Intel's new CEO, PatGelsinger, said in his inaugural public speech that Intel will continue to focus on manufacturing, and that Intel is and will be a leading developer of technology, a major manufacturer of semiconductors, and the world's leading supplier of silicon.
Then, in March this year, Intel announced that it would invest $20 billion to build two chip factories in Arizona, the United States, and planned to allocate at least some of the production capacity to the new chip agency subsidiary.
Intel operates at least four fabs in the United States. In addition to its two chip plants in Arizona, it has facilities elsewhere in the United States, as well as in Ireland, Israel and China.
If the deal goes through, it could help Intel boost its chip foundry business, and it would also be Intel's biggest deal to date. GlobalFoundries is the world's fourth-largest chip foundries, followed by TSMC, Samsung Electronics and UMC.
Regarding the specifics of the acquisition talks, an Intel spokesman said, 'We decline to comment on rumors and speculation.' A GlobalFoundrie spokeswoman also said the company was not in talks with Intel.
